Question Of Motive:

Christian friends, everything that we have – right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start – comes from God by way of Jesus Christ.

That’s why we have the saying, “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.”

Just imagine where we would be without God in our lives.

O-boy!!

Now that’s a daunting thought!

But think about the amazing things God does.

Think of where you were, and where you are now.

And look at how your life is – being changed!

A transitional step.

A shift – a qualitative change.

Your life gradually becoming brighter.

Sure, a profound transformation.

An entire renewal.

Changed from the inside out.

Living beyond yourself and for others.

All good stuff!

Only – don’t blow your own horn!!

Don’t have an exaggerated opinion of your own importance!

Don’t seek attention by trying to impress others!

Don’t do the right things for the wrong reasons!

Instead, do everything heartily and freely for God’s glory.

Remember, God personally made every man, woman, boy and girl.

He created us for His glory.

Now, here’s a God thought:

God does so many wonderful things all around the world.

He is great, and worth a million praises!.

Come-on!

God is not a secret to be kept!

Let’s tell everyone about the amazing things He does.

Don’t forget – you are special!

Your identity – your worth – your value – comes from having a relationship with God.

You are unique, and deeply loved.

God-blessed!

So blow a trumpet for God!

Be motivated by pure love.

Let the world see God in and through you!

Let love – especially God’s love, be on your working agenda!

For His glory!

Yes. Yes! Yes!!

Amen? Amen!

Why We Do What We Do.

Catch Word:

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve had one of those weeks.

It all began when the fold-away seat in our shower cubical came away from the wall!

And before you ask, yep, at the same instant – I was perched on the seat having a shower!!

Sure-enough, I was totally oblivious to what was about to take place!

Still, there was nothing I could do to prevent the sequence of events. It all happened in slow motion.

Fortunately, only my pride was hurt!

So much silliness afterwards though!

Sort of comical!

Then, just a few days later, we celebrated 21 years since I became a recipient of a pancreas transplant – probably one of the longest surviving pancreas transplants in the world.

Very much a milestone anniversary!!

For this reason, we indulged in a lovely lemon cake.

And then, two days after that, we had results come through from a skin biopsy which I had a month ago, as my consultant believed I “may have” another skin cancer.

The good news is, I do not have another skin cancer.

However, true to life, things don’t always progress as we’d like, as the results revealed I have a “form of” eczema – an inflammation of the skin caused by poor circulation.

All the same, the eczema can be treated to a degree, and can be managed, but will never be fully eliminated

Thankfully though, with God’s help, nothing is impossible.

You know, God never promises life will be easy, but we can rest in knowing He recognizes the stress and pressures we sometimes face.

Thus, as Rachel and I were having a coffee together, our attention was drawn to the catch words on our set of coffee mugs:

Be-calm.

Chill-out.

Recharge.

Relax.

Time-out.

Unwind.

It’s amazing how God speaks through the little things.

In truth, some of us are so deep we miss God!

Remember, God loves us.

In light of this, let’s throw the whole of our troubles over to Him, because He cares for us, right?

For-sure!

Life can be a roller-coaster ride, characterized by abrupt and extreme changes.

Hence, through all the ups and downs of life, let’s fix our attention on God.

Step away from the crowd.

Be-calm.

Quiet down.

Find God.

Stroll in freedom.

Chill-out.

Experience a new day.

Super Happy:

Recently I had the misfortune of developing “swimmers-ear” – a rather nasty ear infection. I was so bad, I couldn’t hear at all for a couple of days, and struggled to hear anything for five weeks.

To make matters worse, I also suffered with tinnitus – a whistling and ringing sensation in both ears.

Anyhow, I ended up having a course of anti-biotic’s, followed through with regular olive oil ear drops.

Then, as soon as I had my Ears irrigated, I was finally relieved of my discomfort.

You can only imagine how pleased I was.

In truth, my face wasn’t big enough to contain the expansive smile.

Beaming?

Sure-enough! I was super happy!

Now, don’t get me wrong, and don’t let me puzzle you. I wasn’t grumpy! Far from it!

I’m often reminded – a cheerful disposition is good for your health, gloom and doom leave you bone-tired!

But, being totally blind and virtually deaf was no “smooth-sailing” experience.

Yet, in the moments of trying to communicate with my lovely Rachel, and the times I got it wrong, we still managed to have a good laugh.

So much frivolity!

Hence, the theme for this week.

One of the most vitalizing and energizing things in my experience is a burst of deep, loud, hearty laughter.

You know the type I mean. Belly-laugh!
Nothing alleviates strain and stress so speedily and entirely as a good old laugh!

Admittedly, what we laugh at tells a lot about our character.

But consider this, God’s colours blaze through when we laugh.

Without exaggeration, He thinks we’re a blast!

Face it, friends, He’s crazy about us!

Yes, that’s right!

Envision the smile-producing affirmation!

We make Him laugh.

We bring Him joy.

Now, that’s a thought.

And here’s another:

Life at times – can be concerned with work or important matters, rather than play or trivialities!

Agree? Agree!

So, let’s learn to unwind.

Take it easy.

Chill-out. Relax.

Have a belly-laugh at those funny “roller-coaster” adventures.

Regain renewed energy and strength.

Go-on!

Lighten-up!

Smile out loud, and let that smile burst!

Stop taking life so seriously!

Laugh together!

Turn cartwheels of joy!

Be exuberant about life!

Engulfed in joy and love, love life, live loved!

Faithful One:

Hey, have you ever noticed how things in this world seem to be changing?

Well folks, it’s a fact!

For instance, governing authorities change, political-leaders change, things and people come and go.

Even opinions have a tendency to change!

Rules and regulations change.

Our social connections change.

Appointments and venues change.

Our behaviour, custom, routine and so on – they all change.

The price of postage stamps change!

And the cost of groceries, heating, fuel!

Sure-enough, change is all around.

What’s more, the latest and most admired style in clothes change – funnily enough, that’s something that’s predictable!

Remember what they were in our younger days – and how they are today.

As might be expected, we see some of those fashions recurring again and again!

In addition, whatever we eat up – whether we eat in or eat out – change takes place – depending on the season and what’s fashionable.

In short, our life-styles change.

In truth, if we are alive and active – things are changing all the time.

But there is one constant – established beyond doubt or question – Jesus doesn’t change – yesterday, today, tomorrow.

He’s always totally Himself.1.

He never changes.

He is immutable, the unchangeable.

He is always the same.

We can depend on Him – He’s everything we need.

He’s the faithful one!

Yeah! That’s right!

In Jesus, we see our Father.

Like Father, like Son.

Eternal, yet ever new.

Okay, that may seem beyond human logic!

Nonetheless, impressive stuff!

Cool!

Agree? Agree!

Superabundance.

More Than Enough:

Jesus came so we could have real and eternal life – more and better life than we could ever dream of.1.

For this reason, we’re able to experience completeness, wholeness, health, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, fullness, rest, harmony & the absence of agitation or discord.

Indeed, His peace goes beyond anything we could ever know or comprehend.2.

In addition, He enables us to rejoice with laughter and singing – with a glorious, inexpressible joy.3.4.

Without doubt, His truth has really – and unquestionably set us free.5.

We’re not hampered; not under compulsion or restraint!

In Him, there are no limits in range or scope!

Sure-enough, as far as sunrise is from sunset – He separates us from our sins – He doesn’t remind us how bad we’ve been, and certainly doesn’t consider how we can pay Him back!6.

What’s more, He heals our coughs and sneezes, all our diseases, every one of them!7.

Amazing!

And so, we’re able to praise Him for His joyously unrestrained grace – which He pours upon us day by day.8.

He crowns our lives with love and mercy9.

His loyal love is abundantly present, like an endless stream.

His merciful love is new every morning.10.

Yes, that’s right!

He allows our lives to brim-over with Holy Spirit blessings.11.

Now, that’s awesome stuff!

He’s more than enough!12.13.14.

Hope Of The Hopeless:

In times back yonder, when I was just a lad, I can remember joining in a classic hymn-sing.

Today, one particular song comes to mind:

“One day when heaven was filled with His praises. One day when sin was as black as could be…”

Anyhow, I recall with warmth, how some of the singers pulled out all the stops, especially as we journeyed through the refrain.

Then, we enthusiastically sang:-

Living, He loved me.

Dying, He saved me.

Buried, He carried my sins far away.

Rising, He justified, freely forever!

One day He’s coming. O glorious day!

Such memories!

And know this, the message of this song is as relevant today as it was yesterday.

In reality, this is the most important message we will ever hear.

Yet, this isn’t simply a message in music or words. Nah!

Consider this, God, our Father, longed for us to experience His love.

And He still does.

He confirmed the truth beyond doubt.

But what a price!

Sure-enough, Father loves us!

We are made aware of this because he gave His Son for us.

And when Jesus served as a sacrifice for our sins – He solved the sin problem for good – not only ours, but the whole world’s.1.

What a sacrifice!

Placing things into context, God loved the world so very, very much that He gave His only Son.

Because He did that, everyone who BELIEVES in Him will not lose his life, but will live forever.

Moreover, God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world.

He sent Him to save the world.2.

What an assurance!

And now, we have a new hope.

This hope is a living hope because Jesus Christ was raised from death.3.

What a message!

Hope of the hopeless, our Saviour is He!

Jesus:

Here’s a message worth telling again.

He came to find and restore the lost.

He came for those who are rejected from society or home.

He came for those who find themselves in degrading situations.

He came for those who are suffering with sorrow and pain.

He came for those who aren’t in good physical or mental health.

He came for those who move about aimlessly or without any destination, often in search of food.

He came for the city executive, those who are engaged in manual labour, the casual worker, and even those without employment.

He came for those who are dazzlingly skilled in any field.

He came for those who have stopped functioning and abandoned their dreams.

He came for those who think they’re okey-dokey.

He came for the do-gooder and the wrongdoer.

He came for anyone and everyone.

He came for me, and for you.

And yes, it’s worth saying again, His name is Jesus – the promise of God’s love fulfilled.

He came. And He’s coming again.

What a promise!

The King is coming!

Hooray!!

Amen? Amen!

From the archives – Who Is This?

Crying The Blues:

Hey! Are you feeling discouraged, dejected or distressed?

Searching for hope?

Looking for encouragement?

Needing comfort?

Maybe your life is characterized by a mixture of opposite feelings or attitudes.

Possibly, you’re unsure what to do, where to go, who to turn to next.

Perhaps you’re uncertain or unable to decide about what course to follow.

In your search for clarity, you’re lacking confidence and assurance.

You’re flummoxed!

Perplexed!

Vexed!

Like the composer of sacred songs, one could be confronted by life’s disappointments, dashed hopes, and broken dreams.

“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues?

Fix my eyes on God – soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.”

In this text we have a beautiful picture of the psalmist preaching to himself – not once, not twice, but three times!1.

Now, that’s something to consider!

What! Preaching to yourself?

Yep!

Seriously?

Yep!

Try keeping a spiritual journal – a written record of personal experiences, observations, and reactions to spiritual stuff.

As this gradually develops, you may find it’s a great way in getting to know how God actively works in your life.

In reality, it can be a strength to remind yourself over and over again what God has done.

Focus on those Bible phrases that have a special meaning for you.

From time to time, prompt yourself about the amazing things He does.

Read it again. Back and forth.

Speak to your troubled heart. Aloud.

Go-on!

Preach to yourself!

And when the going gets tough – speak to your troubled heart again.

Digest the words. Let them come-home.

Remember the bright days.

Remember how God is faithful. He is good. Compassionate. Rich in love.

Know this, when it comes to the combination of circumstances we’re facing – no matter how difficult – we have a choice about what and how we feel in the condition which we find ourselves.

Here, the psalmist hits the central idea:

“O my soul, bless God.”2.

He stirs up the deepest within himself – to boast about his Lord.

Then, he repeats, “O my soul, bless God – don’t forget a single blessing!”

Sure-enough, it’s one thing to praise God when things are going well – but to fix your eyes on God when things are tough brings a challenge.

Admittedly, it’s not easy looking up when you’re feeling down!

Yet, only a heart after God will make one happy.

After-all, He is our hope, our encouragement, our comfort.

So, let’s rest in that truth!

Come-on!

What a Saviour!

Agree? Agree!

Amen? Amen!

Kingdom Focused:

As a qualified graphic-designer, there’s something about an architectural work that interests me – particularly church buildings.

In fact, over the years I’ve visited many churches in the United Kingdom, Poland, Hungary, Malta, and even Australia.

The designs have been varied, from stone or brick built – wooden beamed constructions to modern-day triple glazed – steel girder auditoriums.

Looking back, I remember visiting a thatched church on the Isle of Wight.

And there’s that working lighthouse chapel in Devon.

Still, Hillsong in Sydney, Australia, will undoubtedly remain foremost in my memory.

Mega!

No matter where, every building unique. Some attractively old-fashioned, others contemporary. Smart. Impressive.

Whatever the style, one can be fooled into believing that our church building is the “centre of the universe!”

It’s not! The building simply facilitates the Church!

The stone or steel structures are only a building or place that provide a particular service.

We, as God’s people – are the Church.

So, in light of this, where is our attention focused?

Are we facility focused, or kingdom focused?

Friends, we can exhaust ourselves chasing good things.

And there’s nothing wrong with good things!

But FIRST, be concerned about God’s kingdom and what has His approval.1.

Let’s soak our lives in God – He’s the real thing!!

Then, always be ready to REACH-OUT and embark on bold new Godly pursuits.

Let’s look for Kingdom adventure!

Let’s reach-out to one life, one neighbourhood, one home at a time.

Let’s see this generation impacted by the kingdom of God.

And, let’s share the love, hope and goodness of a compassionate and faithful God.

Now, that’s kingdom focused!

God’s Word Translation.

Nothing Like Enthusiasm:

In over thirty years of church ministry – there’s one thing that I’ve observed in others which has made a difference to the progress and growth of my Christian walk – and that’s enthusiasm.

Looking back over the sequence of events – I can remember the moments – as a young junior leader in a children’s evangelistic mission – when a certain leader came into the room – his joyful enthusiasm captured everyone’s imagination.

I’m sure you’ve met the person who is excited about their goals and dreams, and how it shows through in the way they talk and even the way they move!

Such exuberance, gusto, keenness, eagerness, warmth, zeal, passion, devotion and so on.

Just like laughter, enthusiasm can be contagious.

Sure-enough, I’ve been encouraged and influenced by so many over the years.

Consider this, who would you rather be with at home, work, school or play?

Someone who hates what they are doing – or someone who loves what they are doing

I guess the answer is obvious!

Anyhow, this week I discovered a very interesting quote written by the nineteenth century author, lecturer, and poet – Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”

In fact, even the writings of the apostle Paul encourage us to do our work with enthusiasm.

In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Do your best.

Work from the heart. Work heartily.

Whatever you are doing, let your heart be in your work.

And work with a smile on your face.1.

Equally, King Solomon inspires us with confidence, as we read – whatever turns up, grab it and do it. And heartily!

Whatever you do, do well.2.

In light of this, with gusto and without reservation – snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment!

Friends, if enthusiasm drives passion and fuels achievement – set the pace!

Be yourself!

Inspire others!

Keep faith alive!

Build-up hope!

Accept, and reflect the Father’s love!

. Love life!

Live loved!

Amen? Amen!

2 Ecclesiastes 9:7-10

Ecclesiastes 9:7-10
English: Contemporary English Version (UK) - CEV-UK

7 Be happy and enjoy eating and drinking! God decided long ago that this is what you should do. 8 Dress up, comb your hair, and look your best. 9 Life is short, and you love your wife, so enjoy being with her. This is what you are supposed to do as you struggle through life on this earth. 10 Work hard at whatever you do. You will soon go to the world of the dead, where no one works or thinks or reasons or knows anything.
